Our first drive away from Thessaloniki was at north direction. We wanted to reach the borders of Greece with Bulgaria and F.Y.R.O.M. We started our trip with destination the city of Serres. The road is very good. We made our first stop at the main square of the city Serres, in order to rest and drink a coffee.
Our next stop was at the town of Sidirokastro. If you want to visit this town you will have to follow the road that leads at the confine station, called Promachonas and it is one of the gates to Bulgaria. 20 km after the crossroad from the national road Thessaloniki – Serres, you will meet the nodal point to Sidirokastro. At Sidirokastro we suggest you to visit the fortress from which you can enjoy the grate panoramic view. Our next stop was at the confine station, Promachonas. We stopped there to rest and we promised that in our next visit there we will pass the borders and travel abroad… When we left from Promachonas, in our way back, we turned right at the bridge under the Strimonas river.
We made our next stop at Kerkini lake. The landscape there is unique…amazing!!!! If you have time you can go around the lake…it’s really worthy! Doirani is the confine station to F.Y.R.O.M. There we made our next stop near to Doirani lake. If you want to visit the lake you have to follow the road to Mouries; from that point you will have panoramic view of the lake.
Before going back to Thessaloniki, we made our last stop at the city of Kilkis. Kilkis is an unexceptional city. If you visit the city of Kilkis, we suggest you to visit the church of Saint George which is at the highest point of the city. Late in the evening we returned at Thessaloniki to rest for a while and enjoy the city’s night life!
